The Great Santini
by Pat Conroy

Thirteen Bookers were present to discuss The Great Santini.

This is the 5th of Pat Conroy’s books that the Bookers have read, and it was probably our most unsuccessful of the lot. Several of us started it but did not finish, and only about five of us read the entire book.

Lt.Col. Bull Meechum, the great Santini, was such a crude and repellant character that many of us found the reading difficult. And of course the abuse he inflicted on his wife and children was appalling.

The fact that all of Conroy’s books contain an autobiographical element made the reading even more unpleasant.
