Packing for Mars
by Mary Roach

Pat and Carol were the hosts for a discussion of our March book selection. At an earlier meeting we agreed to support the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library’s Madison County Reads Program. This is a community program sponsored by the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library that encourages everyone in the county to read the same book or the works of a single author during one month. This year’s book was Packing for Mars by Mary Roach. I think our book club did an excellent
job with both challenges. Most people in attendance read the book and some read other books by the same author. So we get two checks! There was a lot of interest in this book.

We spent quite a bit of time talking about its many aspects. Things like…The Perilous Psychology of Isolation and Confinement to .. What happens if you vomit in your helmet? Not my favorite part of the book! Some members of the group read aloud parts of Packing for Mars that were most amusing to them. The general thought was that just as you were getting a little weary of facts, the author would throw in some amusing comments that made you laugh out loud. Very few negative comments were made about the book. A suggestion was made that we read one of her others books, but the group decided we might have picked the best one she has written thus far and we would not try another one at this point.

Thank you to our gracious hosts for opening their inviting home to our club. After the discussion we adjourned to different settings to enjoy beautiful views and participate in lively dinner discussions.
