Once There Were Wolves
by Charlotte McConaghy

Wolves have a reputation for being dangerous. Therefore, their reintroduction by Inti Flynn and her research team to the remote highlands of Northern Scotland, is met with a fair amount of resistance by the local human residents who fear for their livestock and their children. The research team is excited to be bringing 14 gray wolves back to their natural habitat from which they have been missing for 300 years. Local farmers are not thrilled. The setting for this rather bizarre tale is established.

Inti arrived in Scotland with her silent twin sister, Aggie to lead the team of biologists who are tasked with the reintroduction of the gray wolves. They hope to start the healing the of the dying landscape that has been overpopulated with red dear who eat all the vegetation in the area down to the nub. Inti also hopes for the healing of her sister, unmade by the terrible secrets which drove them out of Alaska. The details of the twins’ precious life are slowly revealed and the tale takes surprising twists and turns – some of which seemed rather far fetched to our readers.

A farmer is found dead. The town is likely to blame the wolves, so Inti hides the body because she cannot accept that her beloved wolves could be responsible. If the wolves didn’t make the kill, who did? Is the prime suspect her new lover? That answer could be uncomfortable to say the least. So Inti sets out in the wild to save the creatures she loves, both animal and human. Will she be consumed by said wild that was once her refuge?

The book provides poetic descriptions of the wildlife, the locals and the wilderness which make you want to jump on a plane and be there – but would you be safe from all the dangerous creatures??

Does the story prove that man is the deadliest creature of all?
