The book under discussion was In Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen.
This historical novel, set in 1941 England, focuses on a family of five girls. Those who are of age are contributing to the war effort, but Phoebe is too young. Her contribution is to find on the Westerham estate the body of a man in English uniform whose parachute has failed to open. After this opening the book goes on to view the varied attitudes, hopes, and fears of the time, including varying ideas among the English concerning how to respond to Germany’s aggression.
More than a book about the war, this novel focuses on the daughters of Lord Westerham. Of these, everyone agreed that the youngest, Phoebe, was the favorite character.
The group agreed that this was an enjoyable read, not a great book but a good one.
