Bruno, Chief of Police
by Martin Walker

Our September meeting was held at Annie and Pete’s beautiful house on Guntersville lake.
There were 16 members present to discuss Martin Walker’s first book in his Bruno series.

(There was a little confusion about the book because its newest release has the different title, Death in the Dordogne, which was not readily available. Thankfully, Jay figured it out, and we were able to access the original title.)

Of course, Bruno is the chief of police in the small idyllic village of St. Denis in southern France. It is a calm and beautiful place, the ideal representation of rural France, until a vicious murder disrupts the community. With help from other residents and police officials – including Isabel, a developing love interest – Bruno is able to solve the murder and bring the case to a satisfactory conclusion.

Almost all of us read and enjoyed the book, agreeing that it was a quick and easy read. Probably, the only criticism of the book was that Bruno is a very friendly man, an excellent cook, highly competent in his job, a tennis and rugby teacher of the village kids, etc. In other words, he is just too darn perfect!
