A Gentleman in Moscow
by Amor Towles

The Happy Bookers met at the home of Gary and Peggy for our August meeting to discuss A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles . Peggy had prepared a wonderful meal of
ham, green beans, potato salad, and cornbread with the rest of the group bringing other goodies.

The book is a novel about Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov who in the year 1922 was sentenced to house arrest in Moscow’s luxurious Metropol hotel . The Count must live out the
rest of his days in one small hotel room, but he is a man that can accept the way that things are and he makes the best of it. After all he is living in a luxurious hotel with the best food and wine available anywhere. Jay and Gina especially enjoyed the descriptions of all the food and how it was prepared.

The Count makes friends with some very interesting people that come to the hotel or work there. One day he meets a young girl who is staying at the hotel. This friendship will change the Count’s life. Years later she revisits the hotel with a 5 or 6 year old daughter that she leaves for the Count to take care of–and she never returns.

There are so many twists and turns in the story that you can not put the book down. I think it is one
of the best books we have read in a long time and would recommend it to everyone.
