We had a pretty good turnout for the December meeting and there were plenty of snacks to work on while visiting and waiting for everyone to arrive. When we did get started on the book discussion, we quickly learned that most had read some, but not all, of the short stories. It appears that the average number read was four. My comment on the quality of the stories, after I had finished the fourth story, was that O. Henry was not in any trouble. It was noted that dogs were in most of the stories and, in at least one, the dogs were the focus of the story. There was not much discussion and I realized that I had best get the soups reheating because we would be eating sooner than later.
While I was gone, the group took advantage of the time to discuss and decide on upcoming books to read. We also decided on the book for next December, which we had considered for today’s meeting, The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding by Agatha Christie. I reminded everyone that we are still looking for a book for our August 2017 Bookers meeting. The plan is to read a book that has something to do with a solar eclipse while we observe the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, somewhere in the neighborhood of Hopkinsville KY. I have suggested a book co-authored by Isaac Asimov, Nightfall, but if you have another suggestion, I would like to hear it.
One of the soups we had prepared, Pork and Cabbage, just needed to be reheated but the other soup, Meaty Basque Vegetable Soup, still required some cooking and so, when we started eating, only the Pork and Cabbage soup was ready. But there was plenty of soup and, with the accompaniments brought by others, we had a nice dinner, with more interesting conversation. Although Essie was not able to join us, she did send along a bagful of boxes of chocolate truffles, so everyone left with a Christmas treat.
