On a cold January afternoon the Happy Bookers met at Jay and Gina’s home to talk about Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship by Jon Meacham . Only about six people actually read the book, but we still had a good discussion about the two leaders. We all enjoyed learning more about their friendship and the personal problems both men had to deal with at such a time in history. Churchill was convinced that Britain’s future depended on getting Roosevelt to like him. Meacham’s engaging account argues that personal bonds between leaders are crucial to international politics. I was impressed by Roosevelt’s vision for the future.
We were warmed up with some wonderful Irish stew. Marion make some cheese strews to replace the ones that Claudia usually brings.
