The Night Before Christmas
by Nikolai Gogol

The 26th year of the December meeting of the Happy Bookers was held at its traditional location, the home of Linda and Reynolds on Dec. 29. In spite of the inclement weather, the group was quite large. We also had two guests join us, Terry and Sarah from Canada.

Our book was The Night Before Christmas by Nikolai Gogol. Most all present agreed it was one of the stranger books we have read. Just imagine a cold Ukrainian Christmas Eve when the Devil steals the moon and the village witch steals the stars!

After our discussion, we dove into the dinner prepared mostly by Reynolds and then headed back to the living room for our Dirty Christmas (or Dirty Santa) exchange of presents. This year, the gifts included odd things people wanted to rid themselves of, as well as books. Needless to say, there was a lot of laughter as several of us tried to urge others to “steal” our present.

The evening ended with a bit of excitement offered to us by the Burns. The night was dark and stormy and they ended up in the ditch in front of our house. Tow truck arrived, pulled them out and they were on their way with only one piece of the truck left behind. Glad to report no major damage done.
